Unemployment rate falls to six-year low of 9.6pc – CSO

THE unemployment rate has fallen to a six-year low of 9.6pc in the second quarter, down from 10pc, new figures from the Central Statistics Office show.

Unemployment decreased by 43,300 or 17pc in the year to the second quarter 2015 bringing the total number of persons unemployed to 211,200.

The long-term unemployment rate decreased from 6.8pc to 5.5pc in the same period.

There was an annual increase in employment of 3pc or 57,100 in the year to the second quarter of 2015, bringing total employment to 1,958,700.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, employment increased by 19,000 or 1pc over the previous quarter.
